What starts out as an international incident threatens to end the secrecy of the wizard world. On the most magical day of the year, the Day of First Sun, a power-craving wizard plans to overthrow the Wizard Counsel and the mundane world as well, but that takes magical artifacts and it takes knowledge of how to use them.
People get in the way, and when they do, they die. Who is killing them, and why? Annie Person, Wizard Guard, has been hurt by her father’s death, and she is distracted from her job by her realization that she and her childhood best friend are in love, and can no longer be work partners. Pulled to the heart of the intrique, her life too is in danger.
This introduction to Sheryl Steines’ wizard world is a glimpse into an American version of a Harry Potter type culture very much from the adult perspective, a welcome setting for me. These wizards wear sensible clothing, except when they have to appear to be police or FBI, and they use their magic like non-magical folks use smartphones. Her use of magic is well-researched and presented. The characters, especially the supporting cast, have lots of interesting quirks and layers. Steines has done a great job of building the world and then putting believable people in it, mixing the magic in with a deft touch. Even her vamps have personality quirks, and none of them are sparkly. This is worth a read. Get a copy now.
