Bible numerologists claim the number 777 as the number of Jesus and the creation as the expression of perfection in man. People in Vegas like it too.
What is it about seven that is such a magical number?
“1 2 3 4 5 6 7
All good children go to heaven”
(from a Beatles song).
In several mythologies, which I will be exploring this week, seven is the number of perfection, of completion. The Bible has many more references to the number seven than to any other number:
Seven occurs 287 times in the scriptures 287= 7X41. The fraction seventh also occurs 98 times 98=7X14. The words seven-fold also occur 7 times. It is observed that all these numbers are multiples of seven but it is very remarkable to note that 287+98+7=392 and 392 is eight times square of 7. Seven is made up of two numbers four and three. Four being the perfect world number and three the number of divine perfection. The number seven is most sacred to the Hebrews. Therefore it represents a perfect world which is crowned by heaven. So seven denotes completeness through union of earth with heaven. There are seven churches, seven spirits, seven stars, seven seals, seven trumpets, seven dooms, seven new things, seven personages, etc.

What’s interesting to me is that if you look for correspondences and are willing to do the math, you can find many instances of whatever you are looking for. Clearly the numerology of the Hebrew and Christian mystics is woven through the Biblical text, indicating to me that the scribes built their narratives with the reinforcing mystical knowledge.
I’ll be exploring these sevens as I move through the Ultimate Blog Challenge and do more research on mythological lore for a new book, but here’s a little thought to twist your noodle. Another important number that often shows up is twelve, such as the twelve disciples. Twelve is three times four, ( 3 x 4) rather than the three plus four (3 + 4) of seven. That has to be significant, right?

Interesting. It will be fun to see what you find as you do your research. My parents, my in-laws and I were married for 34 years (3 + 4?) before the deaths of our spouses. My father-in-law and dad were both in their 60’s. My husband was 53 when he died, but the illness started showing itself (although not diagnosed until a year later) when he was 52 (5 + 2?). Yep, pretty sure you’re right about the number twelve too.
In many numerological systems, you add the digits together, as you did with your marriage, to get the significant indicator. I’m writing about math today, though it doesn’t sound like any math I know or could ever use. Thanks for stopping by.
Mystics from every corner of the world love numerology. It’d be easy to laugh off except so many different types from disparate areas keep coming up with the same numbers having importance. 3, 7, 13, 666 (which I’ve heard recently is actually either 616 and was mistranslated). Personally, I like 8, 23, and 1947 since those are the magical numbers of my birth. That’s gotta be special, right?
I still suggest that you find the correspondences that you are looking for…and all the various mystics seem to share information. Fives, tens, twelves, and various other numbers are mystical, as well as eleven and twenty-two. I’m fond of 3/15/51 as a birthday myself.
It will be interesting to see the rest of your posts. I’ve been in a study of Revelations for nearly 2 years now…we’re just about ready to wrap it up. We spent some time on the numbers and what they meant to the Jews. There is so much imagery in that book because it is written for the Jews in particular, not the Gentiles. Things that seem so strange to us would have made perfect sense to them…and to today’s Jews who know their scriptures and traditions. It’s fascinating stuff.
There is a lot of mysticism in the ancient religions, and in the Jewish scriptures in particular. I still think that you find what you are looking for, such as all the correspondences that people found after 9/11, but I also think that you think your world into being.
